For Authors and Publishers

Your book hasn’t reached the readers you wrote for? The problem isn’t necessarily the book. It might be finding your readers.

You can write a good book, publish it, market it, collect reviews … and still struggle to reach the people who would genuinely love it.

We’re exploring a different approach to book discovery: one that looks beyond bestseller lists, star ratings and broad genre labels to understand the relationships between books and the readers who are most likely to connect with them.

“I’ve written 14 books… But no one outside my wife and my mom reads them.”
— John, Author

“I know it’s not the content of my book… It’s because I can’t find and reach my target audience.”
— Maya, Author

This isn’t just an individual frustration.

We analysed 151 discussion units from authors talking about the challenges of writing, publishing, marketing and reaching readers. Several themes appeared repeatedly, particularly the difficulty of getting discovered, identifying the right audience, and navigating genre and niche expectations.

27.8%

Reader discovery gap

27.8% of the author discussion units we analysed referenced the difficulty of getting books discovered by readers.

31.8%

Genre & niche confusion

31.8% of the author discussion units we analysed mentioned genre or niche confusion.

19.9%

Platform & algorithm issues

19.9% of the author discussion units we analysed referenced platform or algorithm-related challenges.

These figures come from exploratory qualitative analysis of 151 author discussion units. They are directional evidence of recurring themes, not population-level statistics.

So what could book discovery look like instead?

A book can be good. An author can work incredibly hard to publish and promote it. And the right reader can still never find it.

Ink & Inference is exploring a different model: one based not only on genres, bestseller lists or star ratings, but on the deeper relationships between books, themes, reading experiences and individual readers.

What we’re building for authors and publishers

Ink & Inference is exploring how better book discovery can work from the other side of the equation too.

For readers, that means finding books that genuinely fit their interests, experiences and tastes.

For authors and publishers, it could mean understanding the relationships between books and the readers most likely to connect with them and making those connections easier to discover.

We’re still developing this part of Ink & Inference. We’re speaking with authors, publishers and other publishing professionals to understand what would actually be useful.

Ink & Inference is not a book marketing agency and does not currently offer traditional marketing services. Our focus is book discovery, reader understanding and the connections between books and readers.
