This book, World War Hulk, published in the year 2007, follows a few major events covered in prior comics in the Hulk/Marvel universe. The secret group of Avengers called the Illuminati, which includes Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Mr. Fantastic, and Black Bolt had shot The Hulk into space against his will and he had ended up on planet Sakaar. There, he began a new life, but that was also destroyed. Now, the Hulk comes back to Earth seeking revenge, to destroy those who shot him into space. This graphic novel written by Greg Pak and illustrated by John Romita Jr., the first in a series, is fast-paced and action-packed. They defeated Hulk once; will they be able to defeat him again?

What makes this action adventure comic interesting is that Hulk is angrier than ever. Not only did they shoot him into space but even there in Sakakr, he could not live a normal, peaceful life. Bruce started a new life there, fell in love, got married, and had a family, but the planet and the people were also destroyed and killed, so he wants revenge. The angrier he gets, the stronger he becomes, so the superheroes trying to protect the planet and also themselves must find unique ways to fight him this time. As it often happens, Iron Man volunteers courageously to step in first and solve the problem using his technology and might, but he gets “smashed” immediately. Other Avengers follow and join the team to help, but all of them, even the Fantastic Four get beaten up. Doctor Strange’s powers will also not work when Hulk is this angry. What next?
While there is little to no depth in the plot, not even any witty dialogue, really, and it is all just boom and kaboom and traboom, thanks to its fast pace, for Marvel fans, this graphic novel could make for a high-stakes, fun, one-time read. I’d give this a 3.5-star rating.
